Optical Coherent Communication and Networking Perspectives

The fast market evolution toward 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), high-definition video, driverless vehicles, and telemedicine claims for new advances on optical networking and communication. The laser is a key device to achieve those goals, and the measurement of laser coherence is also related to this effort, including the low frequency noises presented here. If very stable and highly coherent lasers are available, short distance optical links in data centers could be done with significant cost reduction. Also, the semiconductor optical amplifier can be a key device for optical networking in data centers. This paper addresses a brief revision on these matters.
